Progetto LAMP

PROGETTO LAMP, Language training needs of Migrants who work as caregivers of elderly People

LaMP LP addresses directly the language learning needs of migrant women and men who work or will work as professional caregivers of elderly and indirectly those of the family caregivers and the elderly themselves. The problems frequently faced by migrants who work as caregivers are two. 1) Although many of them attend language courses in the host country, usually these courses give a general knowledge of the language, and lack in addressing the specific vocabulary and conversation topics that occur usually among caregiver and elderly people at home during the daily life activities; 2) Although a few of them attend specific training courses to acquire the capabilities of caring, these courses are focused more on practical activities than to learning the corresponding correct terminology, useful to interact not only with the person and the family but also with the other professional caregivers involved in the care of the elderly person (e.g. doctors, nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists).LaMP aims at responding to these needs by:• Organising exchanges of staff and learners to collect, through interviews and focus groups, the practical language needs of the carers, the cared for and their families• Debating the results in international workshops to promote mutual learning through sharing common interests and issues and to define the most common language needs• Creating a toolkit including a “multilingual, multimedia glossary” and examples of conversations aimed at those who will migrate and to those who are already in the new country. The toolkit will include audio and video, useful to facilitate the comprehension of pronunciation and non-verbal communication.• Disseminating the outputs through local meetings, newsletters, brochures, leaflets and a website.
